Tableau supports ad hoc analysis for the everyday user, giving everyone in the business the ability to better see and understand their data. Plus, it allows your business analysts to publish companywide KPIs on one centralized analytics platform for easy consumption.

To function quickly and make your work easy use these short cut keys.


Shortcuts for managing workbooks, sheets and files (Desktop):

  • Ctrl+N: New workbook

  • Ctrl+M: New worksheet

  • Ctrl+E: Describe sheet

  • Ctrl+Tab, Ctrl+F6: Cycle forward through open worksheets

  • Ctrl+Shift+Tab, Ctrl+Shift+F6: Cycle backward through open worksheets

  • F7 , Ctrl+H: Switch in and out of Presentation Mode Switch in and out of Full Screen mode

  • Ctrl+O: Open file

  • Ctrl+SSave fileCtrl+Shift+S: Save file as

  • F12: Revert workbook to last saved state

  • Alt+F4: Close the current workbook

  • Ctrl+P: PrintF1Open Help


Shortcuts for Data:

  • Ctrl+D: Connect to data source

  • Ctrl+F: Activate the find command in the Data pane

  • F5: Refresh data source

  • F9: Run data updates on a view

  • F10: Toggle automatic data updates on and off


Shortcuts for resizing rows and columns:

  • Ctrl+B: Smaller cell size

  • Ctrl+Shift+B: Bigger cell size

  • Ctrl+left arrow: Make rows narrower

  • Ctrl+right arrow: Make rows wider

  • Ctrl+down arrow: Make columns shorter

  • Ctrl+up: arrowMake columns taller


Shortcuts for pages:

  • F4: Start or stop forward playback on the Pages shelf

  • Shift+F4: Start or stop backward playback on the Pages shelf

  • Ctrl+period: Skip forward one page

  • Ctrl+comma: Skip backward one page


Shortcuts for selecting and navigating marks:

  • Click: Select a mark

  • Drag: Select a group of marks

  • Ctrl+click: Add individual marks to the selection

  • Ctrl+drag: Add a group of marks to the selection

  • A: Use Rectangular Selection tool

  • D: Use Lasso Selection Tool

  • S: Use Radial Selection Tool

  • Ctrl+A: Select all data

  • Ctrl+C: Copy selected data

  • Esc: Clear the mark selection

  • Shift+drag: Pan around the view

  • Double-click , Ctrl+Shift+click: Zoom in to a point in the view (if not map, requires zoom mode)

  • Ctrl+Shift+Alt+click: Zoom out from a point on a map (if not map, requires zoom mode)

  • Shift+Double-click: Zoom out

  • Ctrl+Shift+drag: Zoom in to an area in the view (requires zoom mode if not map)

  • Scroll: Zoom in and out on a map

  • Click+drag to bottom of pane+hold: Drag a row and scroll through a long list simultaneously
